Create a Podcast! – Promoting Audio-Blogging in Egypt

Bokra Institute for Media Productions and Studies and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty (FNF) joined hands for workshop entitled "Create a Podcast - A Hands-on-Workshop for Citizen Journalists on the Professional Usage of Audio" from the 27th to the 29th of July, 2010 in Cairo. The three-days affair aimed at promoting audio-blogging and teaching both technical and editorial skills needed to efficiently and professionally produce a podcast. "The Friedrich Naumann Foundation aims to develop and enhance the skills of journalists and bloggers in Egypt and this workshop is part of these efforts" said Mr. Hani Abdel Malak, Program Director at FNF Egypt, in his opening speech.

Two experts in the field of radio journalism and podcasting conducted the workshop: Yasser Abdel Aziz, a professional media trainer and Adham El Shahabi, iPhone programmer and one of the very few Egyptian podcasters. "Podcasting is the future" El Shahabi said, "This is a fairly new technology yet to be introduced in Egypt and we want you to be the pioneers."

Learning how to create a podcast

The participants learned how to report a story, prepare content through research and investigation, conduct interviews and write a script.

In a next step, they were taught the technical side of podcasting: where to find and how to subscribe to the audio-programs, how to produce a podcast and finally how to publish the sound-file online using different media and so called aggregators.

As podcasts are publications, the trainers discussed ethical questions with the participants. "When reporting a story, you must stay objective; your beliefs, attitudes and perceptions have to be left behind. Only look for the truth", Abdel Azis said.

In the end, the participants were in the position to produce their own online radio shows and publish them on the web. The podcasting workshop, the first of its kind ever to be held in Egypt, is part of the Foundation’s programs to promote citizen’s journalism in Egypt.

"We will continue working with Egyptian bloggers and podcasters as we believe that their voice is important for the political democratic development of the country", said Dr. Ronald Meinardus, FNF’s Regional Director.
