Foundation’s Publications Get Big Boost With Official Reprints
Two liberal works in the Arabic language published by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty’s (FNF) Cairo Office have received a major boost after the official "Family Library" project reprinted them in large numbers . "Family Library" recently reprinted 5000 copies of each of the two books "Woman and Mirror" and "Liberalism in the Arab World". These books had first been published by Al-Mahrousa Center for Publishing, Journalism Services and Information in cooperation with FNF in the frame of the series "Liberal Publications". The two books are on sale at a more or less symbolic price of LE 2.00 each at newsstands in all Egyptian governorates.
"Family Library" is a government sponsored project which – in its own words - aims at publishing "literary masterpieces of creative, intellectual and philosophical work, as well as presenting the books that formed civilization since the dawn of history until now" and make these available to the masses at a subsidized price. The project was initiated in 1994 by "Supreme Committee for Reading for All Festival" chaired by Egypt’s First Lady Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak. Various Egyptian ministries and agencies are involved in the effort among them the National Younth Council with which FNF has a cooperation agreement aimed at promoting civic education among the Egyptian youth.
The main objective of the "Family Library" project is the promotion of reading among the Egyptian masses which remains a challenge.
"We are absolutely thrilled that these books will now be accessible to thousands of Egyptians in all parts of the country", said FNF’s Regional Director, Dr. Ronald Meinardus, who is among the editors of the series. He added: "We consider this an important recognition for the quality of our publication efforts".
The book "Woman and Mirror" is a collection of essays on the role of women in politics and society written by authors from the Middle East and other parts of the world; it was edited by Henrietta Heansch, a German researcher in the field of Middle East studies and human rights.
"Liberalism in the Arab World" presents texts written by leaders of Arab liberal political parties and deals with the challenges of the liberal movement in this part of the world.
