Report on the Seminar on Human and Civil Rights

Participant: Bassem Samir

Date:
3 - 17 August 2008

Report :

I thought that a 14-day training abroad, specifically in Germany, would be a long period of time. However, when the two weeks came to an end I truly did not feel that they have passed like that.

There were participants from 24 different countries worldwide (Africa, Asia, South America). Almost every event that takes place every day has its impact on one of us.

The issue between Russia and Georgia had a great impact and opened many discussions especially among the participants from Russia and Georgia.  Not only the issue had an impact, but this was even made profounder by seeing the day-to-day developments on news channels.

There were also participants from India and Pakistan; therefore, the explosions that took place during the training had an impact on the participants and their discussions of the future of the conflict on Kashmir.

The different and new experience that added much to the training was the participation by individuals from Israel and Palestine, the representatives of one of the most important and persistent conflicts in the area. Being amidst such conflicting issues and with many parties involved had a great influence on my ideas, opinions, and my expectations as well concerning the possibility of an opportunity for peace and coexistence among the Middle East countries.

In addition to the personal aspect that this training covered, I have also gained much knowledge and information. The visits made to Nazi Concentration Camps, and the full documentation of the violations of this age revealed to me the necessity of making all facts available to everybody, no matter how painful they are.

The mingling with participants of different cultures and languages was indeed a great experience: they came from Brazil, Guatemala, Argentina, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, China, Tanzania, Israel, Palestine, South Africa, Russia, Armenia, Georgia, and Egypt.

Moreover, getting to know Germany as a great power and to know the system of the German Army and Police; the attempt to integrating liberalism and human rights; the dialogue about priorities with respect to human needs versus the principles and values of liberalism and human rights, were all remarkable experiences.
